The construction and real-estate sector alone contributes an estimated 50% of Estonia’s CO2 emissions and thus presents one of the biggest challenges, and opportunities, to significantly reduce our
emissions.

To transition to a viable, cleaner future and minimise any further damage to our ecosystem, it is understood that we must develop low impact circular patterns of resource use, with plant-based materials
at the core of sustainable construction.

The aim of this project was to explore a renaissance of renewable building materials with a focus on hempcrete, a composite insulation based on waste hemp stalks, as a case study to discover the obstacles,
interactions and potential for development in Estonia.

The resulting proposal is a new centre for developing hemp construction in Estonia and an interactive promotional website to accelerate the use of hemp in the region’s construction industry.
